It was a good day for the Irish players on Day 2 of the Lake Macquarie Amateur Championship at Belmont Golf Club outside Sydney, with all five competitors making the cut.

Richard O'Donovan added a solid 71 to his opening 70 to lead the Irish challenge, while Gary Hurley (pictured above) scorched back into contention with a 67 for 143, the same total as Reeve Whitson, who added a 72 to his opening 71.

Dermot McElroy found some form for a 69 to leave him on 144, while Niall Gorey held his nerve to grind out a 72 for 147, making the cut on the mark.

Australian Daniel Nisbett carded a 68 for 133, and leads the way by one stroke from compatriot Nathan Holman and Australian Amateur champion Marcel Schneider (Germany).
